Congratulations on Turning 50

Published on April 29, 2016

Here is a new word for many readers. A quinquagenarian is someone who has reached the half century mark. We optimistically and unrealistically refer to this as middle-aged, but that designation would actually apply only if your life expectancy is 100 years old.

People who turn 50 often “celebrate” with mixed feelings. Rather than mourning the loss of your youth, it seems more hopeful to celebrate the particular joys of this milestone. By age 50, some of your worst mistakes have already been made. By age 50, you have likely reached some level of proficiency in your career.

In Hollywood, where youth is everything, turning 50 can signal the beginning of the end of your career. However, several stars of movies and television are turning 50 this year, and these show no signs of slowing down. Patrick Dempsey, John Cusack, David Schwimmer and Kiefer Sutherland all turn 50 in 2016. It is hard to picture Adam Sandler as anything other than a perpetual man-boy, but he is turning 50 this year also.

Actresses seem to fear Father Time even more than actors, but these make it seem less scary. Robin Wright, Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, Juliana Margulies, Helena Bonham Carter and Tea Leoni all turn 50 in 2016. Supermodel Cindy Crawford and singer Janet Jackson also turn 50 this year.

In the world of small business, lasting half a century is only good, but increasingly rare. Statistics indicate that the majority of start up businesses fail early, but a few decades of staying power speaks for itself and shows that a business is delivering for its customers. According to Small Business Administration, the majority of small businesses only survive around 5 years with 1/3 making it to the ten-year mark. Think about the businesses that you regularly patronize. How many of those were there even ten years ago? There are many things that can kill a small business. Sometimes a business fails because of external factors like the economy or the competition, but nothing will destroy a business faster than poor customer service.
