Starting 2017 out right

As the year is coming to an end, it’s a great time to take a minute to reflect over the things that you have accomplished in 2016. Perhaps you landed a new job, maybe you got married, became a parent, started a relationship or ended a relationship; whatever 2016 held for you you’re bound to have both good bad memories. It’s always best to focus on the good and try to use the bad as a learning experience because 2017 is right around the corner, giving you a fresh start.

While you ponder over the happenings of 2016, your car probably won’t come to mind. However, it should! Did you know that the average Floridian drives about 12,000 miles over the course of a year? That’s a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle. In order to keep your car running smoothly, it’s important to maintain it. Depending on the age and condition of your vehicle, you should have your oil changed after anywhere between 3,000-7,500 miles. A good rule of thumb is to have your oil changed every after 5,000 miles, but check your owner’s manual to see what the recommendation is.

Another part of your car you should have checked regularly is your brakes. These are pretty important… if your brakes go out you’re in serious trouble! If you notice your brakes screech, are very sensitive or are not sensitive enough, you should bring your car into a reputable mechanic to have them checked.

The transmission is a vital component to your vehicle. It’s important to check your transmission fluid on a regular basis. If you are not familiar with the location of your transmission, consult your owner’s manual. Checking the fluid is very easy; simply park your car, idle the engine for a couple minutes and push the brake pedal. Then pop the hood, remove the dipstick and wipe it on a paper towel. Most automatic transmission fluid is red, and if it starts looking brown that means it’s probably time to change the fluid.
