The Olympics and Cars

Published on August 24, 2016

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, you know that the 2016 Summer Olympics just concluded. Almost every country in the world sends teams to compete in various sports, and for three weeks it’s all anyone can talk about. In the spirit of the Olympics, it’s worth noting some of the similarities between the games and the car industry.

The Olympics was an ancient Greek competition, but the modern form of the games did not come about until 1896. Coincidentally, this was around the same time that cars were beginning to be manufactured (although still on a very small scale). The Olympics did not truly become close to what is it nowadays until the Paris Olympics in 1924, where 44 nations came together for the games, as opposed to the 14 in 1896. This is similar to how cars did not become extremely popular until the 1920s. And as we know, as time as has gone on the Olympics have become increasingly popular, and cars have become the main method of transportation around the world.

There can also be a comparison drawn between athletes and car owners. Olympians devote their lives to training for the Olympics. Day in and day out they are practicing their sport and going through intense physical preparation. They have to take extremely good care of their bodies, because as professional athletes, maintaining peak shape is part of their job. They are, like the expression goes, “well-oiled machines.” While training to be an Olympian is a far extreme, their devotion to staying in shape is inspirational. So often we get lazy with car maintenance and keeping our vehicles in top shape, even though we should work to keep our cars healthy. If we truly make an effort to stay consistent and current with our car upkeep, we can get a longer life out of our vehicles. It is so important to regularly get even the simplest things checked, like getting our oil changed, tires rotated, brakes checked, etc., in order to get the most out of our vehicle.

At Cassels Garage in West Melbourne, we are ready to help keep your cars in great working condition. We are a family-owned shop well equipped to provide routine maintenance or do major repairs on your car.
